Eschatological Knowledge }

( 1 ). If the readers desire to have a part in the LORD's work as soul workers, it would be great for them to begin their own Christian tract ministry by downloading our messages and send or give copies to others. What could be more important for you as an ambassador for CHRIST than to support the BODY OF CHRIST in this way? See { 2- Corinthians 5:14-21 } . . . The messages are already written, so why not pass them on to others? It should be noted that practically all our Scriptures are taken from the "King James Version" unless we Paraphrase the text. We would also suggest that the Bible student begin his own web page which is free on the internet, and download many of our messages and add them to his own web page.

( 2 ). It is possible that thousands of souls could be saved to CHRIST through your own personal Ministry. Think of the blessings that would be bestowed upon you for helping someone to get to know the LORD, and all of these souls will be added to the BODY OF CHRIST! Read again { 2- Corinthians 5:17-21 } which is the commission for you! And, we would hope that you will not make any changes in our messages because they have been thoroughly researched as to content!

( 3 ). As to the writer's belief and doctrine, we are strictly Biblical! We adhere to no denominational beliefs unless what they teach is taken from the true Word of GOD and taught in the correct context. We believe that we are to be busy proclaiming the truths for this present age of Grace, in view of the soon coming of our LORD.

 ( 4 ). We believe in . . .

No - 1. The verbal inspiration of the Word of GOD, { 2- Timothy 3:16 }.

No - 2. The Deity of JESUS CHRIST, and the TRINITY of the GODHEAD, { Titus 2:13; - & - 2-Corinthians 13:14 }.

No - 3. The total depravity of man, and everlassting punishment of those who reject CHRIST, { Romans Ch. 3; - John 3:36; - & - Revelation 20:15 }.

No - 4. Our Redemption by the blood of CHRIST, and by Grace, not of works, are we saved, { Titus 3:5;- & -Ephesians 2:8-9 }.

No - 5. Everlasting life and the eternal security of the Child of GOD, { John 10:29 }.

No - 6. The personality and everlasting punishment of Satan, { Job Ch. 1; - & - Revelation Ch. 20 }.

No - 7. The imminent Rapture [ Resurrection< ] of the BODY OF CHRIST, followed by the great 7 year Tribulation Period and the literal Millennial reign of CHRIST on this earth, { 1- Thessalonians 4:16-18; - 1 - Corinthians 15:50-55; - & - Revelation 20: 1-6 }.

( 5 ). A good idea would be to read your Bible along with each verse we have quoted. It is also very important for the student to look up all the added Bible texts that we have referred to in the Message. This will give the reader much added information! Another thing we should mention is that when we copy a verse from the Bible we will change much of the spelling from the archaic King James language to the modern way of spelling. . . . Such as . . .

( 6 ). "Searcheth to 'searches,' . . . thy to 'your,' ... standeth to 'stands,' ... knoweth to 'knows,' ... maketh to 'make,' ... nay to 'no,' ... bringeth to 'bring,' . . . hath to 'has or have,' . . . saith to 'says,' . . . unto to 'to,' . . . doeth to 'does,' ... wherefore to 'therefore,' ... thee to 'the,' .. . justifieth to 'justify,' ... helpeth to 'help,' ... liveth to 'lives,' ... ever to 'always,' ... lest to 'otherwise or perhaps,' ... hitherto to 'even yet - or thus far,' ... Behold 'take notice,' . . . heart to 'mind or intellet', . . . whereunto to 'the fact is or it was to this end that,' ... elect to 'chosen,' . . . quickens to 'make alive,' ... Lo to 'take notice,' . . . sorer- to 'surer,' . . . saving- to 'except,' ... Woe to 'grievou or distress to you,' ... and etc. None of this will take away from the true meaning of the original text. There will be several things to observe such as ...

( 7 ). [ 1 ]: The reader will notice that we have put words in parenthesis in the various Bible verses. This is done to help the student have a better understanding of the old King James language, which is often a little bewildering to some folks who are not use to that kind of speech. Therefore, please bear with us as we teach the message.

[ 2 ]: The reader will also notice that we have repeated several verses here and there in our message and of course we do this to bring out a better understanding of the message.

[ 3 ]: Also, a few of the questions we ask at the end of some lessons may be repeat questions to bring to mind various things that have been taught in an earlier lesson.

[ 4 ]: The reader will also observe that we have placed dividing brackets such as those below - just above and below the various "Bible Texts," and also Quotes from other ministers and Theologians in our messages.

( 7 ). Commentary . . . { Ch. 38 - & - 39 } of Ezekiel really forms one complete prophecy. It has to do with a vast confederation of nations from north of the Black and Caspian Seas, extending down to Persia on the east, and to North Africa on the south-west. Who in the later days [ i.e., "THE DAY OF THE LORD" . . . The Tribulation Period: ] will be leagued together in a great offensive against the Hebrew Nation after her return to the land that is called by many today - as "Palestine."

( 8 ). "Although, the real name is "the Land of Israel." There has been much attention directed to these chapters during recent years and many idle speculations as to the exact time when these northern powers will make an onslaught upon the land of Israel.

( 9 ). Some believe that the complete fulfillment of the prophecy may take place at anytime, even while the BODY OF CHRIST is still on the earth and while the Hebrews are gathering back to their ancient land in unbelief. Others believe that this prophecy has to do largely with conditions that will prevail during the time of the 70th Week of the Prophet Daniel's great prophecy as given in his "9th Chapter."

( 10 ). To these it seems unthinkable that this prophecy should have its fulfillment during the present Grace Age. This writer believes that this great war will take place shortly after the year A.D. Two thousand and ten because of the different generations involved and because of the significance of Bible Numerology, naturally we will not set any particular date for the event!

( 11 ). Before getting deeply into our message we must mention the fact that when quoting Bible Verses the Bible student will notice that we insert into various Scripture verses, words, and phrases in parenthesis. We do this in order that the reader may receive a clearer understanding of the Biblical passage. We pray that this will not hinder the comprehension of the text.

( 12 ). Commentary ... The Prophet Ezekiel is not the only writer who prophecies concerning the future "Day of the LORD," and that which concerns the invasion of the Middle East by Russia and her great host of confederated allied nations. Revelation, Isaiah, and Joel amongst others have foretold about this great war. We believe that the whole world will be in some way involved when this war comes to its climax!

( 13 ). On the other hand we do not believe that this will be the last war that takes place during the seven year Tribulation Period. We are well aware that in the beginning of the first half of the Tribulation Period the Israelis will build a temple where the Muslim Mosque called the Dome of the Rock stands on the Temple Mount. As long as the Muslims have sway over the Mount, it will be impossible for the Hebrew Temple to be built.

( 14 ). Therefore, we believe that the Russian invasion along with the help of the Muslim coalition will take place right at the beginning of the tribulation, and that the Dome of the Rock will be destroyed at that time. Thus, as there will be no more rule of the Temple Mount by the Muslims, the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple will become a reality, and this will all take place almost immediately after the Rapture. We will talk about this War later on.

( 15 ). In { Zechariah 14:1-4 }, we are told of the gathering of all nations against Jerusalem, an event which certainly takes place prior to the manifestation of CHRIST as MESSIAH the KING of KING's, when His feet shall stand upon the Mount of Olives. It would seem, at the present time, that these northern invaders must invade the land of Israel, and therefore the onslaught depicted in these two chapters will take place during the very beginning of the Tribulation Period.

( 16 ). It is well to remember that there are doubtless details of unfulfilled prophecy concerning that which we do not have an absolute clear. understanding at the present time, but which will all become plain as time goes on. During the seven year Tribulation Period, GOD will open the eyes of the Israelites that they will understand their own Scripture in a way that we cannot because prophecy will be fulfilled right in front of their eyes as it was fulfilled during the lifetime for those of us who were alive on May 14th 1948 when Israel became a nation "IN ONE DAY, { Isaiah 66:7-9 }. This prophecy was fulfilled right in front of our eyes!

( 17 ). Joel wrote to the nation of Judah and particularly to the city of Jerusalem { Joel 3:1, 17 }, Prophesying against the Temple, its priesthood, and its offerings { Joel 1:9 }. When the prophet mentioned the name Israel, he did not refer to the ten tribes in the northern kingdom, but to the 12 tribes during the "Day of the LORD { 3:2, 14 }. The theme of Joel is the "Day of the LORD, { Joel 1:15; - 2:1, 11, 31; - & - 3:14 }. Although the theme is introduced by 'Obadiah { V. 15 },' Joel is the one who develops it.

( 18 ). The phrase, the Day of the LORD, has reference to the direct intervention of GOD in the affairs of man. The theme has a twofold meaning. First, the phrase, Day of the LORD, refers to GOD's judgment which came upon Judah after Joel penned the prophecy. Second, it has reference to the Tribulation Period which will culminate in CHRIST's coming in glory and the establishment of His Millennial Kingdom. --- About that time - during the future Tribulation Period the prophet said:

( 19 ). { V. 15 } Scripture: "For the Day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as you have done, it shall be done to you: your reward shall return upon your own head,

( 20 ). { V. 16 }: For as you have drunk upon My holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yes, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.

( 21 ). { V. 17 }: But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.

( 22 ). { V. 18 }: And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the LORD has spoken it.

( 23 ). { V. 19 }: And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.

( 24 ). { V. 20 }: And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.

( 25 ). { V. 21 }: And Saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the Mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the LORD's, { Obadiah 15-21 }."

( 26 ). The above { Vs. 15-21 } paraphrased in commentary form . . . "

( 27 ). { 15 } Scripture: "For the 'Day of the LORD' is near upon all 'the heathen [ i.e., the Gentiles' ]; as you have done, it shall be done to you: 'your reward [ because of your sins ] shall return upon your own head,' . . . See { Zechariah 12:1-14; - & - Revelation 19:11-21 }.

( 28 ). { 16 }: "For as 'you [ Edom,' ] have drunk upon the mountain of My holiness [ desecrating it in the wild revelry of the destroyers ], so that all the heathen nations 'drink continually [ in turn, of My wrath' ]; yes, they shall drink, talk foolishly and 'swallow down [ the full measure of punishment' ], and you and they alike 'shall be [destroyed'] as though they had not been." See { Revelation 16:14-16. }

( 29 ). { 17 }: "But upon 'mount Zion [ in Jerusalem' ] shall 'be deliverance, [ for those who escape' ] and there shall 'be holiness [ in mount Zion' ]; and the house of 'Jacob [ i.e., Israel' ] shall 'possess their [ own former ] possessions.' . . . See { Joel 2:32; - & - Ezekiel Ch. 36 }.

( 30 ). { 18 }: And the house of 'Jacob [ Israel' ] shall be a fire, and the house of 'Joseph [ Ephraim' ] a flame, and the house of 'Esau [ Edom' shall be ] for stubble, and they 'shall kindle [ and burn' ] in them, and 'devour [ and consume ] them'; and there 'shall not be any [ survivors ] remaining of the house 'of Esau'; [ people of the Edomites' ] for the LORD has spoken it. See { Ezekiel 25:12- 14. }

[ Much of this prophecy was fulfilled in the past but not concluded, the rest will be completed during the Tribulation Period ]!

( 31 ). { 19 }:"And the [ saved Remnant of the ] Israelis of the south part of Israel shall possess the 'mount of Esau [ Edom' ]; and Israel will also possess 'the plain [ the lowland' i.e., ]: the land that had beforehand been populated by the Philistines: and the Israelis shall also possess 'the land and the fields of E'phraim, and 'the land and the fields of Samaria': and [ 'the tribe of ] Benjamin' shall possess 'Gilead across the Jordan River ." . . . [ "Be sure and read { Amos 9:12; - & - Zephaniah 2:7. }"

( 32 ). { 20 }: And the [ 'exiles ] of this host of the children of Israel' [ 'in that day who are among the Canaanites' ] shall possess 'that [ land' ] of the Canaanites and shall possess [ Phoenicia ], even as far as Zarephath, and the exiles of Jerusalem, who are in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south - the Negeb."

( 33 ). { 21 }: And 'Saviours [ i.e., the deliverers, we believe the 12 Apostles in the future Millennial reign will be acting as judges' and ] shall come up on Mount Zion [ to rule and ] to judge 'the mount of Esau; i.e., all the ancient land of the Edomites' ... and the [ whole ] kingdom [ that had been formally promised to Abraham's descendants ] shall be the LORD's, { Obadiah 15-21 }." ... See { Matthew 19:28; - 24:27-30; - Malachi 1:2-5; - Zechariah 12:8-9; - Luke 1:31-33; - & - Acts 15:14-17 }.

( 34 ). Commentary ... There is much to say concerning this one little chapter prophetic testament of Obadiah! We are introduced to the summary statement of { V. 15 }, and the thought begun in { V. 10 } in which Edom was threatened with being cut off forever. In this context, "The 'Day of the LORD" refers to the day in which JEHOVAH as the MESSIAH and King will manifest Himself as the righteous punisher of all ungodly people, see { Joel 3:14 }.

( 35 ). The measure of justice will be in keeping with what Edom had done in her past; and the tiny nation's harvest will be because of their own evil deeds against Judah. Judah's wounds was only temporary for she shall recover and consume Edom { Vs. 17-19 }. Edom's wound will be permanent and Edom shall never recover { Vs. 10,18 }.

( 36 ). { V. 16 } the words "to drink" in this verse is the metaphorical drinking of the cup of GOD's wrath. Just as the heathen, with Edom's approval, caused Judah to drink of that cup and dispossessed them of their goods and national place, so shall all the heathen [ Edom included ] drink of the cup of the wrath of the LORD and pass out of existence, see { Psalm 60:3; - Isaiah 51:17, 22; - Jeremiah 13:12-13; - 25:15-33; - 49:12; - 51:7; - Lamentations 4:21-22; - Nahum 3:11; - & - Habakkuk 2:16 }.

( 37 ). A couple of other statements are worthy of special notice. "The heathen will drink continually," differentiating between themselves and Judah. For as Judah's calamity will only be temporary { V. 17 }, Judah's foes will never regain their former position. The expression "swallow down" in { V. 16 } indicates that they will not merely "drink", but will "swallow down" the contents of the cup of GOD's wrath so as to leave nothing in the cup. In this, and in the preceding verse, we have put into practice the righteous principle of retribution in kind, see { Leviticus 24:17; -Judges 1:6-7; - 8:19; - Ester 7:10; - & - Matthew 7:2 }.

( 38 ). { Vs. 17-18 }: indicates the fact that there will be a Remnant of Jews from Judah who will be saved during the Tribulation Period. The word "deliverance [ Hebrew - peletah" ] is better understood as "an escaped one" or "a fugitive," hence "a Remnant." In contrast to the mountains of Edom from which no one will escape, there will be survivors of carnage of Mount Zion. The character of that Remnant of Hebrews is holy.

( 39 ). This Remnant will be set apart from Edom's purpose-destruction to JEHOVAH's purpose-restoration and exaltation over Edom and all Israel's enemies. The destiny of the Israelis Remnant is to possess there own possessions from the Edomites that the Edomites had taken from them. All the intent of Edom and the other heathen nations in the past, and will be in the future even to this very day, were and are, to strip Israel of its identity and possessions, and land, but fail they did and fail they will in the future!

( 40 ). Future-wise, a Hebrew Remnant such as those mentioned in { Zechariah 13:8-9 } will escape the clutches of the Antichrist when the rest of the nation has perished and shall possess or "regain their ancient possession [ literally, they shall inherit their promised inheritance" ]. "And the house of Jacob shall be a fire ... and devour them."

( 41 ). The future of this Hebrew Remnant is given in two dimensions in { V. 18 } [ 1 ]: As relates to "Judah [ Jacob" ] and "Joseph [ Ephraim" ] will put away their former feuds, see { Isaiah 11:12-15; - Jeremiah 3:18; - Ezekiel 37:16-17, 19, 22; - & - Hosea 1:11 } and will form one Kingdom to execute GOD's judgment against 'Esau - Edom.'

( 42 ). The power of the Edomites and this effectiveness is set forth in the most feared figure of the day, "fire." [ 2 ]: As relates to "Edom [ Esau" ], Edom will be completely helpless against Judah. Judah will be a fire, and Edom will be stubble and will be completely consumed by "Judah [ i.e., the southern part if Israel" ] Though this prophecy is future with relation to the time the prophet uttered it, it is absolutely certain because of the source from whom it comes, the LORD.

( 43 ). Ezekiel chapter 37 proves the promises for Israel which will be fulfilled at the Second Coming of MESSIAH, and include: restoration to the land promised to them by the LORD { V. 21 }, unification of the two kingdoms, Israel and Judea { V. 22 }, purification from all idolatry { V. 23 }, and MESSIAH ruling over them { V. 24 }; see { Ezekiel 34:23 }, possession of the land forever { V. 25 }; see { Genesis 15:18-21 }, and the presence of GOD and His 'sanctuary in their midst { Vs. 26-28 }.

( 44 ). Having predicted Judgment, Hosea in { 1:11 } assured the people of their ultimate restoration, both numerically and spiritually. The word Jezreel mentioned, is a place of judgment in { V. 4 }, and is viewed in { V. 11 } as a place where MESSIAH will bless Israel during the future one thousand year Kingdom Age.

( 45 ). Concerning { Obadiah Vs. 19-20 }: "And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau." To the Oriental mind, one of the worst things that could happen would be for land to remain uninhabited. With the destruction of Edom as a nation, others will come to inhabit the territory from which they have been dispossessed. The people of the "south [ Hebrew, Negeb ]" are the Jews who, in a time future to the prophets, will occupy the regions south of Judaea.

( 46 ). In addition to their own territory, they will possess the adjoining mountainous regions of Edom. 'The people of the plain [ Hebrew, 'shepelah,' literally., hill country" ] are Jews who will in the future occupy the low country along the Mediterranean Sea to the south and south-west of Israel which takes in all of the Gaza strip, the old land that had been occupied by the Philistines, which runs as a long strip between the hills and the sea.

( 47 ). This is the land claimed by the Palestinian's today, the land that the American Government and the world nations desire to give Israel's enemies. The West Bank, Sinai Peninsula all the way to the Nile river where the seed of Abraham had lived in the land of Goshen. Goshen will once more belong to Israel. All the land that Abraham walked over during his life-time in the Middle East was promised to Him and his descendants in the Abrahamic Covenant!

( 48 ). Israel will also possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of "Samaria" which the Arabs claim today. The tribe of "Benjamin" will possess the land of "Gilead," which is the region east of the "Jordan river" formerly occupied by the tribes of "Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh." In addition to his own territory the tribe of "Benjamin" will possess the adjoining territories eastward; and the two and one-half tribes shall occupy the "adjoining territories" of "Moab and Ammon."

( 49 ). The whole prophetic picture is one which necessitates the literal restoration of the ten tribes of Israel as well as the two tribes of "Benjamin and Judah" as foretold by the prophets. We must also remember that the descendants of Moab and Ammon the sons of Lot were also looked upon as being in the same family as Abraham since Lot was Abraham's nephew, therefore those of them who will later become followers of MESSIAH in the future, as Lot's descendants, will have a part in the land of Jordan after MESSIAH's Second advent.

( 50 ). In GOD's economy none of the twelve original tribes of Israel will be lost or have ever been lost. Each will be fully restored and will realize its place in MESSIAH's prophetic program. The "captivity of this host" and "the captivity of Jerusalem" refer to scattered refugees who are among the Canaanites and the area of Jerusalem. These will possess the vacated cities of "the south [ Hebrew Negeb" ]. 'Rephath { V. 20 }' was near Sidon and on the seacoast. It is called 'Sarapta' in { Luke 4:26 } and was a place noted for smelting metals.

( 51 ). The "... woman of Canaan ... { Matthew 15:21-22 }" came from this area. The exact identity and location of the "Sepharad" in { V. 20 } is disputed and the subject is of much conjecture. It is better understood to be a district of Lydia, thus representing the Jews' dispersion far and wide.

( 52 ). The picture portrayed by the prophet is one of complete restoration of Israel, regardless of the extent to which one has been dispersed geographically. Not one person of the Remnant of the 12 tribes of Judah will miss out on MESSIAH's plans for restoration and exaltation ... ( See "The rebirth of Israel in one day in { Isaiah 66:7-9 }, fulfilled: ( 5-14-1948 ), " . . .

 ( 53 ). "The restoration of Israel, { Isaiah 62:1-12 }." . . . "The Glory of Israel during The LORD's MILLENNIAL KINGDOM reign { Isaiah 60: 1- 22 }.". . . "The characteristics of the Kingdom, { Isaiah 65:17-25}." . . . And, "MESSIAH's Ministry of future peace during both Advents, { Isaiah 61:1-11 }." . . . Getting back to Obadiah . . .

( 54 ). This last { V. 21 } of Obadiah is very important, "And saviours shall come up on mount Zion." From time to time in history GOD has raised up saviours, Judges, and deliverers to deliver Israel from her enemies. The peace experienced under these leaders was an example, taste, of the long period of peace they would experience in the future when Israel's MESSIAH would reign in person.

( 55 ). The scope of this verse is unique. It embraces the near view, with the return of "saviours" and "Judges" to dispense justice to the GOD fearing Remnant who have taken over the place vacated by the destruction of their enemies, its focus, under their administration the land would have peace.

( 56 ). The last phrase, "and the kingdom shall be the LORD's," is the ultimate fulfillment of Israel's literal, earthly Davidic kingdom under MESSIAH's future Millennial reign, { Daniel 2:44; - 7:14, 27; - Zechariah 14:9; - Luke 1:33; - Revelation 11:15; - & - 19:6 }. In this last phrase Obadiah is apparently quoting { Psalm 22:29 }. . . . We will get back to these deliverers later on in our message.

( 57 ). Commentary ... Again: an over view of the little book of Obadiah in a sort of story form. We have already spoken of the verses from { 15- 21 }, but since this is such an important prophetic account concerning the nation that was established by Jacob's twin brother Esau, we will now go over the entire prophecy to enlarge upon it. We have spoken of several events that have concerned Edom in other messages we have written, and here the prophet Obadiah himself enlarges on the subject .

( 58 ). The brief prophecy as you likely know was composed in two parts: { Vs. 1-16 } concerns the small nation Edom and its destruction and { Vs. 17-21 } revealing the establishment of the kingdom in Israel and Israel's future restoration and victory. We shall give brief annotations to again assist the reader in the understanding of the prophecy by making here a threefold division:

[ 1 ]: Edom's humiliation and ruin, { Vs. 1-9 }.

[ 2 ]: Edom's sin against Israel and the "Day of the LORD" {Vs. 10- 16 }.

[ 3 ]: The kingdom of the restoration of Israel { Vs. 17-21 }.

( 59 ). { Vs. 1-9 }. In order to understand Obadiah's prophecy in a better way, Edom's origin and history must be taken into consideration. Remember this, Jacob and Esau were twin brothers whose father was Isaac the son of Abraham. The Edomites were the offspring of Esau. Of him it was said that Esau the Elder should serve Jacob the younger.

( 60 ). The character of Esau was soon manifested and his offspring soon became powerful. In { Genesis Ch. 36 } we read of the generations of Esau, who is Edom, just as Jacob is Israel. Esau's sons were called dukes: the national chiefs of Edom, and they are prominently mentioned.

( 61 ). Long before Israel had kings, Edom had such rulers, "And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom before there reigned any king over the children of Israel, { Genesis 36:31 }." In { Exodus Ch. 15 } we read of the dukes in Edom being amazed and in { Numbers Ch. 20 } of the king of Edom.

( 62 ). His outrageous behaviour towards the Jews is recorded in { Numbers 20:14-21 }. Though the children of Israel promised not to drink the waters of the territory of Edom, or take their fruit without paying for it, Edom refused to give Israel passage; while Israel turned meekly away from Edom.

( 63 ). Thus Edom branded itself as the enemy of the people of GOD. They had an undying hatred against the children of Israel, the sons of Jacob. They had an envious dislike toward the people of GOD, naturally this was because Satan used them as an instrument against the LORD and the LORD's adopted Hebrew nation! Later Edom was attacked by King Saul the first King of Israel, and was eventually conquered for David by Joab { 2- Samuel Ch. 8 }. During the reign of 'Jehoram [ or Joram' ] Edom revolted and gained independence.

( 64 ). When Judah and Israel began to decline Edom became more and more arrogant and rejoiced in the evil which came upon the people of GOD. Their dwelling place was the former possession of the Horim, a race which lived in caves in the mountainous region, much like the cave dwellers on the North American continent. Edom then possessed the caves that the cave dwellers had previously dwelt in - which had been cut into the cliffs or sandstone; many of which are still present today.

( 65 ). These rocky enclave's used as habitations were suited to their warlike character and gave them the shelter they needed. Hence they are mentioned in { Obadiah V. 3 } as "Dwelling in the clefts of the rock." The ruins of Petra still bear witness to former grandeur. The wickedness of Edom continued and when the Chaldeans came to destroy Jerusalem they also seemed to have shown their hatred. We read:

( 66 ). Scripture: "Remember, 0 LORD the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem, who said raze it, raze it, even to the foundation thereof, { Psalm 137:7 }."

( 67 ). The above verse paraphrased in commentary form ... "Remember O LORD, against the Edomites, that they said in the day of Jerusalem's fall, Down, down to the ground with "her [ her, Israel" in the feminine gender ] in all her completeness."

( 68 ). Commentary ... The Edomites would have really been astonished had they realised that Israel would some day become the Bride of MESSIAH, just as Christians today will be surprised for the same reason! Ninety Nine percent of ministers today teach that the BODY OF CHRIST will become the Bride of MESSIAH at His Second Coming. The Scriptures teach other-wise.

( 69 ). See our message Concerning "The BRIDE OF CHRIST in a study of that whole subject!" As for the Edomites, they were also in evidence during the Maccabean period and later in the person of Herod the great, who himself was an Edomite, who reigned in Jerusalem. The judgments pronounced upon Idumea, their dwelling place, had found a starting fulfilment.

( 70 ). But, this certainly does not end the story of Idumea; there was to be a future revival of Edom and an ultimate history. This will be at the close of the age, when the LORD re-gathers the Remnant of Israel that are still alive at the end of the Tribulation Period. Judah and the ten tribes will all be reunited, then and before Edom will appear once more in prominence.

( 71 ). Actually, Israel's arch enemies the present day Palestinian neighbours of Israel, are living in Gaza and the West bank of Israel at this very time, and they are evidently the modern Edomites who will be destroyed at MESSIAH's return. The modern Edomites have already confirmed their undying hatred against the sons of Jacob, but Israel in a victorious move will lay their hand on Idumea. The following verse has a double meaning, part fulfilled in the past, the other part to be fulfilled in the future. . . .

( 72 ). Scripture: "But 'they [ the Israelis' ] shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines towards the west; they shall spoil them of the east together: they shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon shall obey them, { Isaiah 11:14 }."

( 73 ). Commentary ... The words "shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines," referring to the low range of foothills between Philistia and the mountains of Judah. Notice this land is to the west of Israel along the Mediterranean Sea. Thus, Israel will spoil and overwhelm the old land of the Palestinian's and their cohorts, and this will obviously include the West Bank of the Dead Sea.

( 74 ). "They shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon." Edom, south east of the Dead Sea, and Moab and Ammon refers to modern day Jordan on the east of the Dead Sea, all of this land will be overcome by the Israelis. This will be accomplished during the Tribulation Period.

( 75 ). Remember this, the land of Idumea doesn't only refer to the old nation of Edom but also to some of the lower part of Israel which was falsely claimed in olden time by the Edomites, and is presently falsely claimed by the Muslims today. If the reader will notice on the Bible map in the back of most Bibles of lower Israel - west of the Dead Sea, he will see the name "Idumea" written on the map! We also read of this future judgment upon the people of Edom as follows . . .

( 76 ). { V. 5 } Scripture: "For My sword shall be bathed in heaven: Behold it shall come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of My curse, to judgment.

( 77 ). { V. 6 }: "The sword of the LORD is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams: for the LORD has a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Idume'a, { Isaiah 34:5-6 }."

( 78 ). The above { Vs. 5-6 } paraphrased in commentary form . . .

( 79 ). { 5 }: "Because My sword has been bathed and equipped in Heaven, 'Behold [ take notice - and pay strict attention' ], it shall come down upon 'Idume'a [ the descendants of Esau' ], upon the people whom I have doomed for Judgment. See { Obadiah 8-21 }.

( 80 ). { 6 }: The sword of the LORD is filled 'with blood [ of sacrifices' ], it 'is made [ gorged and greased': ] fat with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams: for the LORD has a sacrifice 'in Bozrah [ the capital of Edom, which was a sheep herding center in Edom' ], and a great slaughter in the land of Idume'a, { Isaiah 34:5-6 }." ... See { Isaiah 63:1; - & - Jeremiah 49:13 }.

( 81 ). Commentary ... Idume'a. Edom. The estranged brother of Israel, a type of all estranged unbelievers { Hebrews 12:15-17 }. This above prophecy was only partly fulfilled in the past, but the remainder is to be fulfilled in the future when the LORD will have a sacrifice in Bozrah which we believe will likely take place in the West bank of Israel.

( 82 ). And, a great slaughter will be administered in Idume'a during the "Day of the LORD." And, then the desolation of Edom continues from that day onward, see { Isaiah 34:5-17. } . . . { Ezekiel 25:12-17 }: speaks both of land of Idume'a and the old land of the Philistines.

( 83 ). The Gaza Strip bordering the Mediterranean Sea and of which actually is a part of Israel's inheritance was the abode of the Philistines, and the Palestinians of today living there will be overcome by the LORD since they are just as much an enemy as the Philistines were in the past. As we have stated the prophecy in Obadiah was partially fulfilled, it awaits its final accomplishment in the "Tribulation Period."

( 84 ). For a marvellous view of the future Millennial Kingdom, the reader should read { Isaiah Chs. 35; -60; - & -61 etc.} This will take place right after Messiah returns and Judges the World's nations! The reader should understand that the words "Day of the LORD" is mentioned both in the Old Testament and in the new Testament such as in { 1- Thessalonians 5:2 } and it usually refers to the Tribulation Period, but it can in some instances also refer to the Millennial Reign of MESSIAH.

( 85 ). Scripture: "For it is the Day of the LORD's vengeance, and the year of 'recompenses [ deliver repayment' ] for the 'controversy [ cause' of their evil pride against ] of Zion, { Isaiah 34:8 }."

( 86 ). Commentary . . . The words "Controversy of Zion" in the above verse concerns many different annotations. Obadiah's prophecy actually begins with the announcement that tidings had come from the LORD which was heard from the prophet and by the people; an ambassador had been sent forth among the nations to summon them to go to battle against Edom. The hour of Edom's overthrow had come. The LORD right at the very beginning had made the Edomites small among the nations.

( 87 ). Like many other small nations, It was pride which brought them low so that they would be greatly despised. As Obadiah states about the dwellers in the rocks who thought themselves secure and boasted of it by saying, "Who will bring me down to the ground? { Obadiah V. 3 }." But, the humiliation of Edom had been decreed by the LORD and no power could stop its execution. [ Read also our Message concerning "The Song Of Solomon }.

( 88 ). Edom's nests were 'high as the eagles', yes, even so high that their habitation seemed to be among the stars { V. 4 } [ mountainous terrain ], yet the LORD would bring them down. His destruction would be complete; the spoilers would not be like the thieves, who steal till they have enough; or like the grape gatherers who leave something behind, { V. 5 }. There would be a clean sweep, everything searched out, even the hidden things, { V. 6 }. Even those in whom they trusted, with whom Edom made a covenant would deceive them and prevail against Edom.

( 89 ). Those with whom the Edomites had made an alliance and gave hospitably would turn against them and prove treacherous, though they had eaten bread with them. Their friends of the heathen nations, whom they had stirred up against Israel, would forsake them completely, { V. 7 }.

( 90 ). And, the LORD would "destroy the wise out of Edom and understanding out of Esau, { V. 8 }." Even the wise men will not be able to help them; their wisdom and understanding will not avail. Teman is mentioned because it was known for its wise men; Eliphaz, who spoke so well to Job was a Temanite, { Job 4:1 }. And the prophet Jeremiah in his testimony against Edom wrote . . .

( 91 ). Scripture: "Concerning Edom, thus says the LORD of hosts; Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the [ intelligent and ] prudent? Is their wisdom vanished?" { Jeremiah 49:7 }." . . .

( 92 ). Commentary ... But, now their wise and valiant ones would be cut off by slaughter. { Obadiah Vs. 10-16 }: Edom's sin and violence against her brother 'Jacob [ Israel' ] comes now in special remembrance. On account of it shame would cover them and they would be cut off forever. When Jerusalem was in trouble and the Philistines and Arabs plundered the city { 2- Chronicles 21:16-17 }, They stood on the other side and revolted { 2: Chronicles 21:8-10 }. And more than that, they joined in plundering the city.

( 93 ). Thus it was afterwards when the Babylonians came against Jerusalem, Edom rejoiced; they spoke proudly. Perhaps what is recorded in { Obadiah Vs. 12-14 } happened repeatedly. They stretched out their hands for the possessions of GOD's people. They placed themselves at the crossroads to cut off the fugitives and delighted to deliver up into the hands of their enemies the Jewish remnant which was left. The true fact is . . .

( 94 ). All this will be repeated once more, when another great prophecy will be fulfilled and Jerusalem is once more surrounded by hostile nations as they are presently at this very time! Therefore, not to far in our future will be the fulfillment of { Zechariah 14:1-5 }.

( 95 ). Not a few superficial Bible students thought when Jerusalem was captured by Israel in the 1967 Israeli war with her hostile Arab enemies, that a repeat of hostilities with old Edom's posterity would come to pass. They thought that all looked great for the new political revised Hebrew nation! Now Zionism would really flourish and finally all her ancient promises were presently on the way to fulfillment.

( 96 ). But, since the new revised nation first began its new existence in 1948, nothing but trouble and carnage has troubled the Jewish people! Old Testament hatred still prevailed with Satan at the helm as the instigator against GOD's beloved people. There will soon come another siege of Jerusalem, which will precede the glorious appearing of Israel's promised MESSIAH and KING.

( 97 ). That siege is prophetically described in the words of the prophet Zechariah. And, among a great horde of invading nations will be found a host of Edomites once more aligned with the invaders so that they can manifest their malice and hatred against Jerusalem. The world desires to succumb to Satan's demands and split GOD's land of Israel into sections with Israel finally being cast out and away from her promised inherence.

( 98 ). Then, to show the link of connection between the future and the past, the prophet announces the "Day of the LORD." "For near is the day of JEHOVAH upon all nations." This day has not as yet come to pass. There has been judgments upon Egypt, Babylon and others, nations which were nations of power and culture, which have fallen under the dealings of a righteous GOD. These judgments of the past did not bring that day which the prophet Obadiah predicted or the day of which the prophet Joel who came after him predicted would come.

( 99 ). The Day of the LORD upon every nation of the world is still future. When it comes it will mean dreadful and harsh judgment for all nations, including Edom, Moab, and yes the US also, plus every nation that is mentioned in the Scriptures of Truth: and that day will be immediately followed by a Millennium of blessing and glory such as the earth and people of every race has never known before. It will bring Divine retribution. "As you have done will they do unto you." The nations of the earth will have to drink of the cup of the fury of MESSIAH's wrath.

( 100 ). { Vs. 17-21 }: The final section of Obadiah's brief prophecy concerns the Millennial Kingdom, the victory over Israel's enemies and the final restoration of her small Remnant of people. Mount Zion will come into its own; there will be deliverance and there shall be holiness. What JEHOVAH - foretold in the distant past to be for the Remnant of His people in the future will be accomplished. And, the Israelis will be a holy people and will henceforth hold on to all of their possessions from that day onward, that the LORD in His infinite Grace has promised them.

( 101 ). On the other hand, the House of Esau will be consumed, so that none shall remain of the posterity of Esau, while Israel - GOD's chosen nation will occupy all of Edom's territory. The Saviours mentioned in the last verse of this prophecy [ or deliverers ] must mean the chosen instruments which go forth to teach all nations and make known the glory of the King MESSIAH in their midst. . . .

( 102 ). For the Millennial Kingdom shall be the LORD's! As we have mentioned elsewhere, the "Saviours" in { V. 21 } likely refer to the 12 Apostles who were promised to become judges during the Millennial reign, see again { Matthew 19:28; - & - Luke 22:30. } See also { Isaiah 1:26; - & - 32:1 }.
